What David Alworth calls “site reading”–looking at literature to see what it can tell us about social spaces such as parks, plazas, streets, and waterfronts–has become of much interest to literary scholars in the past ten years. This course takes up questions of physical space in literary texts of the past 60 years. We will consider the relationship between literary form and space, identity and space, walking and literature, protest and literature, the future and the city, and so on.
